In the late 1970s Steven acquired some Afghan cannabis seeds from a friend. These cannabis seeds would be the foundation for the Northern Lights strain. After Greg McAllister aka Seattle Greg first son was born Steven gave Greg four Afghan seeds, there were two males and two females. The strain from these plants would be known as Murphy Steven's "Purest Indica". Herbie Nelson worked at Steven's hydroponic shop, Herbie bread a Purest Indica clone that Greg gave him with a Hawaiian sativa, this cross would become the famous Northern Lights #5 strain. Don Down aka The Indian crossed the purest indica with an Afghan hybrid this would become the Northern Lights #2 strain.

For the next several years Seattle Greg and a small group of friends would cultivate and breed these cannabis seeds indoors under lights. This is how the Northern Lights strain got its name, if it wasn't for Steven Murphy, Herbie Nelson, Greg McAllister, Don Down and Nevil Schoenmakers the world would be without one of its most beloved cannabis strains, " Northern Lights ".
