Mel Frank

James J. Goodwin AKA Mel Frank a self-taught master grower, breeder, author, publisher and photographer of cannabis. Mel smoked his first joint in January 1968, and he fell in love with cannabis that day. Mel had an apartment on West 78th street in New York city where he started growing cannabis indoors in March 1968. He wrote his first article about growing cannabis indoors under lights in 1971 for the New York flyer of Rolling Stone.

This is when he met Ed Rosenthal and together they wrote Marijuana Growers' indoor / outdoor guide. Mel wrote about growing cannabis indoors and Ed wrote about growing outdoors, all of the photographs were taken by Mel Frank. This book was published in 1974. Thier second book Marijuana Growers guide was published in 1978. Mel founded Red Eye press in 1988, and he published his third book Marijuana Growers Insider guide and Marijuana Growers guide deluxe. He also published Rob Clarkes book "Hashish" in 1988.

Mel Frank is responsible for creating Afghan #1, Durban poison and indirectly responsible for

the creation of G-13. In 1981 Carlton Turner from 

the University of Mississippi legal government marijuana cultivation farm knew Mel and contacted him to acquirer some cannabis seeds from the strains he was working on. The cannabis seeds Mel sent Carlton would be the foundation for the genetics of the G-13 strain. In 2018 Mel had two Art Gallery showings for his photography of cannabis all the way back to the 1970s. The first was at the M+B art gallery in Los Angeles California titled "When We Were Criminals".

The second was at the Benrubi art gallery in Manhattan New York city. Both showings had excellent reviews. Mels photography and articles have been in countless magazines and books. Mel Frank has earned the title "Godfather of the marijuana growers". His life's work in the field

has been honored by two industries lifetime achievement awards. James J. Goodwin aka Mel Frank risked everything for the love of cannabis including his freedom. His lifelong commitment has helped to bring cannabis awareness into the mainstream. Without people like Mel Frank the cannabis we have today would not be the same.
